Janice Mellon

Janice Lorraine Mellon, a woman of strength, independence, and quiet determination, passed away on Wednesday, February 12 at the age of 91. Born on August 15, 1933, in Kennydale, Washington, she lived life on her own terms, embracing both adventure and simplicity in equal measure. Janice had a love for the natural world and stayed active throughout her life. She found joy in gardening, hiking, and cycling well into her 70s, appreciating the beauty of the outdoors and the satisfaction of a well-tended plant. She was known for her quick mind and competitive spirit, whether playing Scrabble or collecting news articles that sparked her curiosity. Though she had strong opinions, she also had a sense of humor and a stoic awareness of life’s unexpected challenges—like the time she set out to drive from Arizona to Washington, only to end up in Bakersfield before deciding home sounded better after all. She valued health and wellness, always exploring vitamins, herbal remedies, supplements, and her own unique skincare methods. She attended church and maintained connections with friends and family, showing up in her own way, sometimes with a candid remark or a knowing smile. She was practical, self-sufficient, and always ready to tackle what life threw her way. Though Janice had a tough exterior, she was a steadfast presence in the lives of those who knew her. She found ways to care for those around her, even if she wasn’t one to often express it in overly sentimental ways. Her resilience, sharp wit, and independence left a lasting impression on all who crossed her path. She was preceded in death by her son Les Shannon, and her brothers David and Jay Mellon. She is survived by her sons Chuck Dunlap of Pima, AZ, and Ward Tingley of Scottsdale, AZ; daughters Joy Zizz of Chelan, WA, and Sharon Bloom of Florange, France; sisters Lois Espinoza of Chelan, WA, Kathleen Trent of Everett, WA, and Ginger Puckett of Poulsbo, WA; as well as seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Janice lived life with determination and an unshakable sense of self. If she were to leave us with any final words, they would likely be direct, honest, and perhaps a little unexpected—just like she was. Her unique personality leaves a void in her absence, and she will be missed by those who loved her.
