Terrence Michael McIver

Terry Michael McIver, son of Regina and Henry, native Californian, son of San Diego, dean of family political discussions, and keeper of obscure college team names, died on Monday morning, January 19, 2015, in his bedroom, surrounded by his family, who held and prayed him to Jesus. A true pioneer, Terry embraced the Paleo Diet years before it became popular. His love of food extended equally to street tacos and buffet restaurants. A true carnivore in the purest sense of the word, if you ever ate a meal with Terry you were treated to a symphony of moans at times disconcerting to his table mates and downright puzzling to surrounding patrons. A great athlete, Terry could flat out play tennis. He was tenacious, competitive, and brave hearted in his approach to sports. One of California's best high school tennis players in 1965, Terry accepted a full scholarship to Arizona State University. In 2012 Terry and his senior mates won a 3rd place title in the USTA National Senior Tennis Championships. As recently as two days before he died and bedridden, Terry was heard calling for Kathleen, his wife of 40 years, to join him in the bedroom to watch the Tennis Channel. Terry loved to talk about politics and it is a certainty he has respectfully requested seating in the right hand section of heaven. Never one to shun an energetic political discussion, Terry participated with joy in talking about the politics of the day whenever the family came together for a weekend meal or birthday celebration. Terry's death, coming one day before President Obama's 7th State of the Union address, marks his final demonstration of political preference. He loved sports. It is with great joy that Terry cheered his beloved Seahawks on to their improbable victory over the Packers the day before he died. No matter the outcome of the next game, it is comforting to know Terry died fully conscious his Hawks had emerged victorious. If the phone rang in the home of a family member during the broadcast of a sporting event of any kind you could bet it was Terry, calling to talk about the play that just happened, what should happen next, and perhaps quizzing you on the mascot, team colors, or fight song. But far more than sports, or food, or the odd political discussion, Terry loved his family. In addition to his wife Kathleen Terry is survived by his son Brian McIver, daughter Alicia Volyn, and son Terrence McIver. He deeply loved and adored his grandchildren, all 7 of them. He greeted them with pride and boundless enthusiasm, and played with each of them as if he too were a child. Isaiah Volyn, Karen McIver, Elliot McIver, Gabriella Volyn, Bradley McIver, Sydney McIver and Zachary McIver all loved their "Papa", and their squeals of laughter and desire to be with him demonstrate just how strong the bond of love is between them. If Terry knew you, then he had given you a nickname. It is certain each of his 13 siblings received one, and his talent for hanging a nickname on you extended far beyond Regina, Daniel, Mary, Katherine, Timothy, Kevin, Robert, Maureen, Patricia, Ann, Susan, Patrick and Elizabeth. Terry did not suffer materialistic foolishness. He was a seasoned veteran of the garage sale, a skill he displayed with pride each time he returned home after such an outing, converting another's trash into his treasure. Nor did his sense of fashion extend beyond whatever Kathleen or his children bought for him or gave to him. However, above all else, Terry learned to love the Lord. He became a devoted Christian later in life, but his faith was strong, and he died knowing there is far more in store for humanity, something glorious and everlasting, than the fleeting life this earthly world affords. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, 3:00pm at Mountain View Assembly of God, 330 N. Lyle, East Wenatchee, WA.
