Tribute for Richard Wilson Flournoy Jr. July 23, 1926 - June 1, 2018 Richard Wilson Flournoy Jr., was born in Seattle, Washington, on July 23, 1926. He is the oldest of four children in his family. From his boyhood years, Richard remembered the fun of swimming in the cold waters of the Puget Sound, and he recalled seeing major changes take place in Seattle through the challenges of the Great Depression. In 1947, at the age of 21, Richard enlisted in the United States Army. He was first stationed at Fort Lewis near Tacoma, WA. His enlistment began an extended period of service as a soldier and later as an officer. While stationed in Oakland, CA, he met and later married Harriet Thorsen, and they were together for 62 years. As a soldier and an officer, he served during the Korean War. During these years of loyal service in defense of our nation, he was awarded the Purple Heart, having been wounded in combat during a time of war. He was also awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1969 with the rank of Lt. Colonel, having faithfully served for 22 years. Most importantly, it was at an early age, through his parents, that Richard learned of God's love for him. When Richard was in his late 70s, he received assurance of his salvation. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). He was a dedicated patriot, an honored veteran, and a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. Richard is survived by his daughter Lynn, and her husband Brian Ernsberger, granddaughters, Kris and Jen; and his sister, Yvonne Durst of Montana. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Harriet; his brother, Doug; and a sister, Sharon Smith. A Graveside service, with Military honors, will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Crown Hill Cemetery, located in Ballard, Washington. A Memorial Service will be held for Richard at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 22, 2018, at Lincoln Park Baptist Church, located at 286 Crawford Ave, in Wenatchee, WA. Following the Memorial, friends are invited to join the family for a reception being held at Lincoln Park Baptist Church.
