John Richards McClanahan

John Richards McClanahan passed peacefully on February 2nd, 2023 at the age of 76 in Entiat, Washington after years of dialysis and kidney failure. He was born on March 17th, 1946 in Hastings, Nebraska to newlyweds Donald and Iva McClanahan. John was joined by a brother Charles "Chuck" and a sister Mary within a few years. They soon moved west to Cottage Grove, Oregon where John lived and graduated from Cottage Grove high school in 1964. John met his wife Dorothy (Purcell) McClanahan when they both worked at Kimwood manufacturing company in Cottage Grove and began dating in 1965. John enlisted in the US Navy in 1965. He and Dorothy were married on July 8, 1966, in Cottage Grove, Oregon. John was on active duty in the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Hollister and USS Shelton in Japan, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. They lived in San Diego, California while he completed his enlistment. John was baptized in 1967 and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for the remainder of his life, most recently in Quincy, Washington. After John finished his tour in the US Navy they moved to Bend, Oregon where John took civil engineering classes at Central Oregon Community College . Their first child Michelle was born in Bend, Oregon in 1971. Soon after her birth, they moved to Roseburg, Oregon where John began a long career with the US Forest Service. Their second child Melissa was born in Roseburg, Oregon in 1975. After several moves, they settled in Myrtle Creek, Oregon in 1977 where they lived for 36 years. John served most of his working years in the Umpqua National Forest retiring in 2005. Due to his health issues, John and Dorothy relocated to Entiat, Washington in 2013 to be closer to family. He spent a lot of his free time hunting and fishing right up through this past fall. He was also an avid sports enthusiast and could ALWAYS find a sport on TV to watch. John is survived by his wife of 56 years Dorothy, two daughters and their husbands Michelle and Dave Rogge of Chelan and Melissa and Mitchell Mellor of Bothell WA, grandchildren Chase, and Mackenzie Rogge and Sarah and Rachel Mellor, his sister Mary (Allen) Beach, his brother Chuck McClanahan, many nieces and nephews and two bonus grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents Don and Iva McClanahan. We would like to thank Dr. Anzalone, Dr.Bolles, and Dr. Slapnicka for their care of him over the past few years. We thank the staff at Davita dialysis who provided great care to him and became his friends over the past few years. We would also like to thank the staff at Confluence Hospice for the support in his final days. For his final wishes, no memorial service will be held. Interment will occur at a later date at Tahoma National Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Memorial Chapel East Wenatchee.
