Elizabeth Thi Engley

Elizabeth "Dung" Thi Engley, 68, a 44 year resident of East Wenatchee, passed away at her home on Tuesday evening, September 25, 2012 following an extended illness. She was born Dung Thi Nguyen on October 10, 1943 at Saigon, Viet Nam to Tuvan and Trong (Nguyen) Pham. Raised in Saigon and educated at a Catholic school where she also learned to speak French and English. Following her education she received training as a Pharmacy Assistant and later she was hired by the U.S. Army as a civilian waitress serving the troops. She met Richard B. Engley while serving the troops and following his military discharge he returned and they were married on February 7, 1968 in Saigon. Upon completion of their Embassy documents, they made their home together in Wenatchee, one year later they purchased property and a home in East Wenatchee and started an orchard. Together they raised five children and were also able to get her remaining family safely to the US. While the kids were in school she was invited to teach in their classrooms her cooking skills and proper usage of chop sticks. She worked at a variety of fruit companies sorting and packing fruit which had included, Skookum, Chief Wenatchee, Northern Fruit, Bardin Farms in Monitor, Columbia Fruit, Dole and Nevada Street Cherries. The money that she made went to assist her children and helping others in need. She had also helped as a translator and interpreter assisting other refugees. She enjoyed cooking, stories and watching her family play football, baseball and basketball. Elizabeth was a longtime member of Holy Apostles Catholic Church in East Wenatchee. She is survived by her husband, Richard "Dick" Engley, East Wenatchee; children, Thanh (Joe) Engley, Wenatchee, Kenneth "Ken" (Shelly) Engley, East Wenatchee, Maria (Bobby) Spencer, East Wenatchee, Richard "Rick" (Jennifer) Engley, Gig Harbor, Teresa (Milo) Gust, East Wenatchee; three sisters, Hue' Nguyen, Othello, WA, Cuc Rosenberger, St. George, UT, Hong Pham, Seattle, WA; six grand children, Collin Engley, Chase Engley, Keisha Engley, Kai Spencer, Eliza Gust and Amaya Gust all of East Wenatchee. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Apostles Catholic Church on Monday, October 1st at 10:00 a.m., with concluding services and interment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Vigil Service will be on Sunday, September 30th at 6:00 p.m. at Heritage Memorial Chapel.
